The great dot-com busts of the late
1990’s and early 2000 made the classic
mistake of assuming that they could
build a great website and the riches
would soon follow. Many of these sites
did in fact build incredible sites,
featuring fantastic functionality, robust
powerful engines to process information
and provide tremendous tools.
However, many of them spent their IPO
millions and didn’t have the money left
or the wherewithal to bring people to
the sites. Very few sites survive on
word-of-mouth alone, you must push,
pull and drive consumers to a website.
1. Banner advertising. Despite
reduced click-through rates, banners
are still a mainstay of many profitable
online advertising programs. Test, test,
test to determine placements that work
and creative that works.
2. Rich media is hot. Rich media
is the type of banner ad that moves
or plays video or sound or interacts
with the viewer. Two separate studies
have confirmed that rich media gets
three times the click-through and two
times the sales.
3. Search Engine Optimization.
SEO is hot. The first three or four
links you see on a Google or Yahoo!
Search are paid links, make sure you’re
doing the right things to be listed
on the top page(s) and explore paid
links.
4. Affiliate Marketing. Most
sites generate 10-30% of their sales
through a network of affiliates who
refer their web traffic to sites that
pay a bounty for the referral. See links
below to find out how affiliates can
work for you!
5. Integrated Marketing. Make
sure your web site, and reasons to visit,
are on all of your other marketing materials.
Don’t forget your email signature and
business cards. Great tools to touch
customers and bring them to your site.
