Be the Lawyer Everyone Knows. Grassroots & Guerilla Marketing from The Local Lawyers Leaders Blog

Maria

Google, Ai search, SEO, social media—they’re all changing at a remarkable pace. But one thing hasn’t changed: when someone needs a lawyer, they’re far more likely to call the attorney they already know or the one a trusted friend recommends.

That was the focus of our latest Ten Golden Rules live event, where I was joined by Chris Earley, Lee Rudin, Jonathan Merel, and Kurt London to discuss how successful firms build recognizable brands in their local markets. While each attorney has a different style, they all shared one common philosophy: relationships drive referrals, and referrals drive great law firms.

One of the biggest takeaways was that grassroots marketing isn’t about writing sponsorship checks. It’s about showing up. Whether that’s coaching youth sports, supporting local charities, hosting networking events, speaking at community organizations, or simply being visible where your future clients spend their time, consistency is what builds familiarity and trust.

The panel also talked extensively about referral marketing. The firms seeing the greatest success aren’t waiting for referrals to happen—they’re intentionally building relationships with physicians, chiropractors, accountants, therapists, financial professionals, and other attorneys. Those connections become one of the most valuable and sustainable sources of new business.

Several speakers shared creative ideas that have helped separate their firms from the competition. From memorable branded merchandise that people actually enjoy wearing to hosting networking events inside their offices, the message was clear: give people a reason to remember your firm long before they ever need a lawyer.

Another recurring theme was personal branding. Attorneys who regularly share educational content on LinkedIn, YouTube, and social media stay top of mind with both referral partners and prospective clients. Today’s best marketing doesn’t always feel like marketing—it looks like answering questions, helping people, and being an active member of your community.

Some of the top strategies discussed included:

  • Building a database that keeps your firm top of mind
  • Creating strong referral relationships through consistent networking
  • Becoming visible through community involvement and charitable events
  • Developing a memorable personal and firm brand
  • Using educational content and social media to build trust
  • Creating merchandise, events, and experiences people remember
  • Combining grassroots marketing with SEO, AEO, and Ai search for maximum impact

Perhaps the biggest lesson from the event is that grassroots marketing and digital marketing aren’t competing strategies—they amplify each other. Every community event creates content. Every referral strengthens your reputation. Every video answers a question that someone is searching for online.

Technology will continue to change how people find lawyers, but relationships will continue to influence who they hire. The firms that combine both will continue to stand out in increasingly competitive markets.
