The Ten Golden Rules of Online Marketing 10.2: What Law Firms Should Focus on Now

Digital marketing has changed dramatically since The Ten Golden Rules of Online Marketing was first developed in 2003. Today, law firms are competing across Google Search, Local Services Ads, Pay-Per-Click advertising, Google Maps, social media, video, and increasingly Ai-powered search results. But the core principles remain the same: test, measure, build trust, use the right tactics, and keep improving.
That was the focus of our latest Ten Golden Rules Live event, where Jay Berkowitz shared updated strategies, new case studies, and practical examples of how law firms can generate more leads and convert more of those opportunities into signed clients.
One of the biggest lessons was the importance of measuring what really matters. In one campaign, $19,000 in advertising generated 74 leads and 16 signed cases, producing a cost per signed case of about $1,200. The real goal isn’t more clicks or impressions—it’s understanding which campaigns are actually producing clients and improving those results over time.
Website conversion was another major focus. In one law firm test, shifting the emphasis from a large form to encouraging phone calls helped increase signed cases by 44%. The lesson isn’t that every firm should remove forms, but that every firm should continuously test its calls to action, landing pages, chat, forms, and phone experience.
Google also remains central to law firm growth. A strong website, optimized Google Business Profile, Local Services Ads, Google Maps visibility, Pay-Per-Click advertising, and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) all work together. Paid strategies can generate opportunities quickly, while SEO and content build long-term visibility and reduce dependence on paid traffic.
Ai is creating another important opportunity. Search results are changing, but the fundamentals of good content are becoming even more valuable. Law firms that consistently answer real client questions through blogs, videos, FAQs, and educational content are better positioned for traditional search and emerging Ai search experiences. Jay also demonstrated how Ai agents can help with meeting preparation, communications, and even networking Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems.
Some of the top strategies discussed included:
- Measuring cost per signed client, not just clicks or leads
- Testing website calls to action, landing pages, forms, chat, and phone conversions
- Building a strong Google Business Profile and Maps presence
- Using Local Services Ads and Pay-Per-Click for faster lead generation
- Creating educational content around the questions prospective clients are actually asking
- Building trust with reviews, testimonials, awards, and helpful content
- Using email and social media to stay top of mind
- Responding quickly to calls and messages
- Testing new Ai tools and Ai search strategies before competitors do
- Continuously improving every part of the marketing system
Perhaps the biggest lesson from The Ten Golden Rules 10.2 is that the platforms will keep changing, but great marketing still comes down to the same fundamentals: know your numbers, create value, build trust, test constantly, and lead the trends.
